Some church volunteer opportunities reach well beyond Sunday morning. The Day Space, a ministry of Journey Church in Calgary, is a welcoming daytime support centre for people experiencing homelessness. It is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and serves hundreds of people each month.
The Day Space offers a safe place to rest, meals and hygiene facilities. It also connects people to housing, health care, detox and treatment, employment and financial supports, working in partnership with Distress Centre Calgary. If your church needs more hands, a few simple changes make a big difference:
- Name the role clearly. “Help with kids” is vague. “Sunday nursery helper, 9:30 to 11:00, twice a month” gets a yes.
- State the time commitment up front. People say yes when they know what they are signing up for.
- Offer a first step. A one-time event role lets new people try serving without pressure.
- Make your needs visible online. People search before they ask. If your volunteer needs only live in the bulletin, most people will never see them.
- Say thank you in public. Recognized volunteers come back.
