Thanksgiving in Alberta: Gratitude, Giving Back & Finding Your Church Family
Oct 10, 2026 · @Jodi Morel
Gratitude Is a Practice, Not Just a Holiday
This weekend, families across Alberta will gather around tables in Calgary, Edmonton and every town in between. Thanksgiving Monday falls on October 12 this year, and for many of us the weekend starts the same way: with a church service, a long meal, and a moment to name what we’re thankful for.
Scripture puts gratitude at the centre of faith. “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Not just in the good seasons. In all of them.
Whether you’re new to the city, looking for a church home, or wanting to make this Thanksgiving count for someone else, here are a few ways to make the most of the long weekend.
Find a Thanksgiving Church Service in Calgary or Edmonton
Thanksgiving Sunday is one of the most welcoming weekends of the year to visit a church. Many congregations hold special services, potlucks or harvest celebrations, and visitors are always part of the plan.
FaithFinder lists more than 1,455 churches across Calgary and Edmonton, from every Christian tradition. It’s a simple way to find a congregation close to home.
A quick tip: service times often shift on long weekends. Check the church’s own website or call ahead before you head out.
Ways to Give Back This Thanksgiving
Some of the most meaningful Thanksgiving stories never make it to the dinner table. They happen in church kitchens and community halls.
While building FaithFinder, I kept meeting people doing quiet, good work. A church fundraising to feed people who are unhoused. A business owner collecting warm clothing before winter. None of them knew each other, and that’s exactly why this platform exists.
If you want to make this weekend about more than the meal, here are a few places to start:
- Volunteer at a church meal or food program. Many churches run Thanksgiving dinners for neighbours who would otherwise eat alone.
- Donate to your local food bank. Fall is a high-need season in both Calgary and Edmonton.
- Gather warm clothing. Coats, mitts and boots matter more every week as winter comes.
- Invite someone in. A student, a newcomer or a neighbour without family nearby may be waiting for an invitation.
Ask your church what they’re doing this weekend. Odds are they need one more set of hands.
Support Christian-Owned Businesses in Alberta
Thanksgiving shopping is part of the weekend too: the pies, the flowers, the last-minute groceries. When you can, choose businesses that share your values and give back to their communities.
FaithFinder’s business directory connects you with Christian-owned businesses in Calgary and Edmonton.

Simple Gratitude Practices for the Long Weekend
Gratitude grows when it’s practised. Try one of these with your family this weekend:
- Go around the table. Each person names one specific thing they’re thankful for this year. Specific beats general.
- Write a thank-you note. A pastor, a teacher, a neighbour. Someone who showed up for you.
- Read a Psalm together. Psalm 100 and Psalm 107 are both written for giving thanks.
- Start a gratitude jar. Add a note each week and read them together next Thanksgiving.
- Pray for someone outside your circle. A family facing their first holiday after a loss, or someone spending it alone.
